Winemaking Info : Twenty-one day fermentation in tank with pumping over twice a day, and press wine blended back into free-run wine. Full malolactic fermentation. Gravity pumped into a combination of two-year-old Seguin Moreau barrels and one-year-old Taransaud barrels and aged for 15 months.

Wine Description : This is a full-bodied 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, and is derived from a Chilean red fruit with hints of spice. Powerful and youthful with an abundance of ripe red cherry.

Bottle Rock festival hits Napa

“The festival starts on Wednesday, May 8 with a kick off party headlined by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at the Citi Stage, before Louis Prima Jr. takes you into the night at the Uptown Theatre. Thursday the festival kicks into full gear, as the first full day of music starts at 11:30 a.m. with Cosmos Percussion Orchestra. Thursday closes out with The Avett Brothers at 8:15 p.m. Comedian Tig Notaro closes out the first full day of the festival with a comedy show at 10:15 p.m.”

The Martinez News-Gazette, established in 1858, is one of the oldest continuously operating newspapers in the United States, and one of the first newspapers in California. The tri-weekly serves the county seat of Contra Costa in the San Francisco Bay Area.

With bands like the Black Keys, Zac Brown Band and Kings of Leon headlining the five-day festival in Napa Valley why wouldn’t you give the first year festival a chance.

The festival, which will be held at Napa Expo, is just a couple blocks away from down town Napa, so before you go in or after you go in you can get a taste for Napa, whether it’s the wine, food or local shopping.

The Napa Valley is the number two hottest destination in California behind only, Disneyland, and a festival like Bottle Rock will surely continue to keep the destination a hot spot.

The festival is not only about music, and comedy, as there are great bands playing and comedians telling jokes, totaling over 60 including Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Jim Gaffigan.

“Playing outside is one of our favorite things,” said Christian Letts of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. “Playing at sunset, sounds travels different, that’s why I like playing festivals. There are lots of people mixing up and dancing around it leads to some really interesting experiences.”

The festival is about raising awareness for good causes.

“Doing things that make sense to people who are bringing us the music,” said Bob Vogt of WillPower Events. “We keep a close relationship with the Napa Valley and the community we live in.”

Bottle Rock, which was created by WillPower Events, which has produced other concerts for causes, are driving the Bottle Rock festival to support foundations such as but not limited to, Autism Chords, Bacchus Benefits Group, the Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County, Breast Cancer Fund and Global Zero.

“We were thinking about it for a couple years,” said Vogt. “We hoped we could do it, and it was a fairly risky proposition. So we came up with something, we hoped it would be good enough. Now we are proud of it.”

One dollar from every transaction of beverages goes to the Bacchus Fund, while the other non-profits we are helping get four dollars from every ticket sold.

So a multiple-day festival that sponsors great causes and has great artists filling the air, what else will the Bottle Rock festival provide the festival-goer?

Great food from Nicks Cove, Napa Valley Biscuits, Mark’s the Spot, Sweetie Pies and Zuzu to name a few of the 36 eateries that will be on hand to serve you food, go great with wine which come from several local vineyards such as Flora Springs, Miner Family Winery, Silver Oak and Delectus, just a few of the 42 wineries who will have wine for sale.

Friday the music continues as another full day of music fills the air of Napa, They Went Ghost have the first performance of the day at 11:45 a.m. with the Black Keys closing out the show at 8:30 p.m. Comedian Jim Breuer gets the honors to close out the Friday at the comedy stage with a 10:15 performance.

Saturday is another 11:45 a.m. start with Martin Hartley. Kings of Leon close out the music portion of Saturday at 8:30 p.m. but comedian Jim Gaffigan closes out Saturday with a comedy set at 10:15 p.m.

Sunday the final day of the festival is a shorter day, but only in terms of time, as the lineup for music and comedy is still jammed pack as Erin O’Hara kicks things off at 12 noon and Zac Brown Band closes out the festival at 7:45 p.m.

“We are going to have lots of cool surprises visually and musically,” said Danny Reyes of the Zac Brown Band. “The show is going to be way more interactive with folks, it’s ever evolving and changing.”

Louis Prima Jr. is drinking vodka in the back of a PT’s pub, and I ask him to tell me about his tattoos. On his right arm, there’s sheet music to Nine Inch Nail’s “Hurt” (“I hurt myself today to see if I still feel”). Left arm: Radiohead’s “Creep.”

“I’m a dark soul,” Prima says, but he also says, “I’m a happy soul.” Or rather, “I want to be happy.”

“I want to make people happy. There’s nothing better than getting onstage and making people smile for a living. But life ain’t always pretty. There’s a little sad part to me. I keep that to myself and I keep that in my ink.”

Not long ago, I saw Prima and his eight-piece band rock the Paris Las Vegas, and I was so impressed by their tight musicianship and high energy, I tracked Prima down here in this PT’s pub at Decatur Boulevard and Flamingo Road so we could catch up.

He has his dad’s manliness. His dad, Louis Prima, was the talented songwriter and Vegas bandleader of the classic hits “Just a Gigolo,” “Jump, Jive an’ Wail,” “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Angelina,” “Oh Marie” and “I Wanna Be Like You” from Disney’s “Jungle Book.”

Prima Jr. grew up in Las Vegas and in New Orleans. His dad gigged in both cities.

“My father made a living doing five shows a night,” Prima says. “He was gone most of the time.

“He was the greatest dad in the world. He was every bit as fun offstage as onstage.”

When Prima was 9, his dad underwent surgery for a brain stem tumor, lapsed into a coma and died three years later, in 1978, leaving behind $2 million in IRS debt and little or no song royalties.

“He lost a lawsuit, and rather than pay them whatever it was — $36,000 back in ’62 or ’63 — he said, ‘You can have them all’ ” — the rights to those classic tunes, Prima says.

So Prima was raised by his mother, Gia Maione, who scraped for every dime they got.

“When my father entered the hospital for surgery in 1975, he wrote a check to his manager to pay the band for one week. And when he was asked about Gia and the kids, he said, ‘(Expletive) them, let them figure it out,’ ” Prima says.

“It’s not been all tiptoeing through the tulips. There’s been battles and struggles and ugliness. I was wearing clothes my mother made me, and I was proud of it,” he says.

His mother, now living in Florida, recouped most of the song rights and re-established the elder Prima’s legacy.

“It’s an empire she has built from nothing.”

Three years ago, Prima put together his crack band and started playing everywhere — Italy, New York, New Orleans, Vegas, Seattle and onward.

This Saturday, the band (officially: Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses featuring Sarah Spiegel) plays the Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation’s Ladybug Ball. Next week, they play the BottleRock Napa Valley festival with Jane’s Addiction, Kings of Leon and The Black Keys.

“We’re not playing nostalgia here. I call it ‘The Shock Factor,’ ” Prima says. “It takes two or three songs for people to understand I’m not Bill Murray singing ‘Star Wars’ on ‘Saturday Night Live.’

“This is what my father did. He was loud, he was brash, he was obnoxious, it was boisterous, it was energetic, it was entertainment by destruction. It was, ‘You’re going to listen to this, and like it, and enjoy it, and forget the world exists.’ And we do that for 2013.”
